Ill admit when I first heard this album, I was rather taken aback by the lack of death metal. The album is still metal and heavy but the band continued to explore fusion and jazz elements to great effect. They even included a brief instrumental, Samba Briza that included percussion, a very Latin/jazz bass line, piano and jazz noodling on guitar. The album had to grow on me but as a person who appreciates all kinds of music, I have grown to love the very in you face approach they took. The album was intended to be the bands last as they wanted to break up but needed to finish their three album deal first. I think this was a wake up call that death metal needed as it was released at the very height of the genres popularity among fans but also the cold stagnation was starting to creep in, too. This was a breath of fresh air much like Cynics Focus. Even studio drummer Josh Greenbaum used only a single kick drum set with one pedal from what Ive read \m/
