Ill go Cuban one step further...I think were in the beginning of the END of professional sports as weve known it for the past 120 years. Unfortunately, this vehicle has run its course, on a macro-level in relationship to world-culture. Sport went thru the stage of being a war-surrogate, then it became fodder for cultural & jingoistic agendas...later, sport took on an Every-MAN reflection, and all of these bore positive fruit insomuch as they INSPIRED, not only the participants, but all who were affected by the participants struggle for excellence. Sport brought out the best in humanity...it broke down barriers...it developed peoples personal triumphs...it peaked Mans imagination, and it enhanced his self-worth. But, then it made it to the final stage...entertainment, an element of which it always bore to be sure...but now its entertainment with all capital letters, its entertainment as Big Business and its entertainment for entertainments sake only. M.O.N.E.Y. The athletes are more important than the sports themselves, and the proverbial cart is firmly entrenched in front of the horse. The problem??? Entertainment is pacification, and like the baby, sooner or later it becomes bored with the pacifier...and when it does, every mom in the world will tell you that nothing else will work. In the modern sports scene, the various entities have so crowded the marketplace (KISS has a Football League????), until not a single day goes by in which some type of game is being played. As fans, we have become so dependent on higher and higher thrills, until we let ourselves become addicted to Virtual Games played by fictionalized caricatures of the actual athletes. We cant keep up. Extreme Combat, MMA, Cage-Fighting, etc etc etc...we are hellbent on becoming over-saturated and then the ultimate crisis will eventuate..plete and utter boredom. D.O.N.E.
