Im a little late to the party on this...but... I saw a lot of angry comments alleging Islamophobia on the Bill Maher show, and praising Ben Affleck for his response. After actually watching the Bill Maher episode, and seeing the way Affleck browbeat and misrepresented/misinterpreted Harris comments, Im quite uncomfortable at how many folks on my feed attacked Sam Harris as being Islamophobic (I understand attacking Bill Maher, as hes a bit of a blowhard, in general). When I criticize the religious right in Texas for their attacks on womens reproductive health rights, or for their bigotry toward LGBTQ folks, or for the lies theyve inserted into kids text books, I am not being oppressive to Christians. Likewise, when Sam Harris criticizes Islamic religious leaders in Afghanistan who effectively enslave women, and impose their religious practices and laws on others, he is not being oppressive to Muslims. He is, rightly, criticizing horrible acts. IMHO, moderate religious people have an ethical obligation, at least, to denounce the extremists within their faith. Lack of that denouncement empowers and enables extremism. https://youtube/watch?v=u_ubamwlPI8 patheos/blogs/friendlyatheist/2014/10/04/bill-maher-and-sam-harris-debate-islamophobia-with-a-defensive-ben-affleck/
