Im a proud American and think that in most ways, we do things better than most other places...but I cant close my eyes to the decline in our standards in many ways. Today at work I was listening to an R&B station, and I had to ask myself how can anyone with two functioning connected brain cells think this rap and hip-hop stuff is good music? Im old enough to remember when black artists made the best popular music going. But the stuff I heard at work today--Ill be blunt--was TALENTLESS SHIT, ugly, repetitious, monotonous, obnoxious, grating NOISE. Ill listen to country now and then, and its better, but most of it is formulaic and pretty mediocre. Thats why I find myself retreating back to previous decades, even back to times before I was born, to find something worthwhile to listen to. Socially and culturally, the 60s were a horrendous mess--but the music was alive, fresh, and inventive. Some of it was mawkish, but it was REAL and MEANINGFUL. I listen to classical as well, and I love my Brahms, Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Mozart, etc.--but more and more I find myself listening to music from other countries because, quite frankly, the musicianship is of higher quality and the artists more legitimately talented. Ive become a major fan of groups like Within Temptation, Nightwish, and some others...and recently Ive discovered this gorgeous and immensely talented French-Indonesian singer, Anggun...Its odious to compare this wonderfully talented vocalist to the trash that sells on the American airwaves--like Katy Perry, for instance, who bellows everything she sings...goive this a listen and see if you agree...then check out her A ROSE IN THE WIND, STILL REMINDS ME. UNDRESS ME and IN YOUR MIND and some others by her... youtube/watch?v=0IicUWC6p_U
