Im an attractive white male from an upper middle class background. Ive made a point throughout my time here to avoid people with similar backgrounds and create and be a part of a more diverse friend group. My confession is this: it would have been much easier, and perhaps advantageous, to surround myself with people of similar backgrounds. Its not easy to put yourself in someones tethered vans from high school when youre wearing brand new sperrys and vice versa. The point of my confession is this: both sides of the economic ladder need to work on overcoming our natural psychological tendencies to stereotype and avoid certain groups of people regardless of their backgrounds. If we cant bridge the economic gap on an individual level (and theres no place better for that than college), then how are we supposed to bridge it on a societal level? Stay open-minded Gauchos.
