Im beginning to think Elon Musk needs a little quiet time in room - TopicsExpress

Im beginning to think Elon Musk needs a little quiet time in room with pads on the floor, ceiling and walls, a nice, sturdy canvas coat with wrap around sleeves, and some really nice people that will give him the appropriate medications to stay calm. 2,000 satellites, in low Earth orbit, to provide broadband wifi to the masses?! Other than LEO is pretty much chalk full of manned stuff, GPS sats, miscellaneous junk like left over boosters, dead spy satellites, those 2,000 sats hes proposing would just make it way too dangerous not only for the humans up there on the ISS, but the rest of the junk as well. As for low latency, my calculations conclude that the latency would to high to be practical The satellites would have to be large enough to handle several million billion data frames going up and down, and being fault tolerant in a reasonable amount if time, gives me a migraine. There are too many unknown unknowns. The only feasible plan I can think of is using cell technology with at least 1gbs of bandwidth per channel (and thered be an unknown number of unknown channels to handle the traffic - right now, even 4G is pokey slow to the point one feels theyre back on dialup). And whos going to pay for the service and how much time will be needed to add the technology to the existing feel towers nationwide let alone planetwide (no Federal funding at all, venture capital only). Elon is an excellent Big Idea guy, but I dont know how much hes thought through the technological issues for all those satellites. Its a nice thought, and would certainly be a boon to the rural population. But we are running out of useable RF bandwidth (they just freed up the VHF/UHF television freqs by forcing everyone to go digital and that took an act of Congress). If I go on much more you wont need to read the article, so Ill stop here. If anyone does read this and have any questions or comments please feel free to use the comments section or Facebook Message me, always being aware that I do have a problem dumbing down technological subjects (which was one of the reasons I kept getting fired, because I was smarter that my co-workers, supervisors, managers, the chairman and board of directors and CEOs (who really are a stupid lot, and have exceeded their Peter Principle levels of incompetence by at least an order of magnitude if not 3 or 4 orders). Again, just a thought...
