Im branching out my suburbs suck post into this new post, as Im going to make an actual serious-post on this issue: Homes are for when people decide that they arent going to progress any farther in life to any great degree and it is what it is. Its a marker of settling. Thus the relation to family - well, Im just going to stake my claim and spread my seed right here. And, because of that, their conversation is normally only about that little bubble they constructed around themselves, because thats all that matters to them from that point on. In Detroit, where there is a half century class/race divide between city and suburb, this has created more homogenous bubbles, where those in the suburbs (where the homes are, or where you raise a family due to schooling) enclose themselves in smaller castles than in a lot of other cities, and maintain ignorance about anything outside of that. They spread these same ideas amongst their children, extending the generational class/race divide. This closed-in lifestyle manifests itself in myriads of ways in which these people conduct every aspect of their lives - recreation, conversation, dating, outlook, etc. The end result of this is a self selection where many of the more open minded of these groups experiment with the city, realize that its actually preferable to them (due to being around more like-minded people), and either spend a ton of time down there, or actually move down there if possible. The ones that dont, also stay with like minded people, in their suburban bubbles. Even in looking at voting maps on social issues, going by area, thats partially why even the urban areas of said suburbs are the only ones that are able to understand, or care, about basic sociological issues like bootstraps not working in a capitalistic society by default because an underclass is self perpetuating. Look at even Rochester or Royal Oaks voting map on various propositions and the enclaves or edges are normally 100% one way, the actual downtown livers a different. People generally self select by where they live. This is also why the East Side (Warren/Eastpointe/St. Clair Shores/Roseville/etc.) is absolutely the worst - its more geographically secluded than the central/west side, meaning even less mingling. Combined with generally lower income and lower education than the northwest/north central suburbs, a lot of resource/class conflicts are created. Just as one example, making a soft dating map of the suburbs in the past, the east-suburbs were ridiculously white-only in preference while the whiter and richer Rochester/Birmingham/Bloomfield Hills had like 500% less people that would put that on their profiles. The difference in the suburbs being that a ton of people from said enclaves drive to their suburban downtowns, crowding out the people that live down there, while Detroit, due to city issues/layout, doesnt get the outside of downtown surrounding city in Corktown/Bricktown/Midtown/etc. bars. This isnt 1-1, of course, there are tons of cool house owners with families spread around the suburbs, but theyre drowned out in any suburban gathering place by a ton of stupid douches, just due to numbers. Also, this is not white only - Southfield black people are just as guilty of this, as are Dearborn middle-easterners, etc. When people dont mingle for generations, it normally creates crap.
