Im not a big fan of the primitivist, back-to-nature movement. I find this romanticism and idealization of nature very Western. We shouldnt turn our backs on civilization, we have come such a long way! Im pretty sure many natives living in nature would cherish the modern conveniences so many hippies have repudiated in favor of the wilderness. For instance, my attitude to camping is to make it as l̶u̶x̶u̶r̶i̶o̶u̶s̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶s̶e̶n̶s̶u̶o̶u̶s̶ comfortable as possible. Before our Mt. Tarak dayhike, we camped at Aguawan Beach in Sisiman, Mariveles, Bataan. Unfortunately we were not able to explore the surrounding areas- not the dramatic crags and cliffs and the charming lighthouse that sits on top of a green rolling hill, postcard-perfect scenes that brought me there in the first place. It was also cloudy and we werent able to see any stars, though the full moon bathed our evening in a magical glow. There are no rooms for rent in Aguawan Beach; this cottage we rented for P350 and its where we set up our tent. The outhouse is filthy and there were trash in our cottage because the previous occupants had just left and the caretaker didnt clean it.
