Im not a parent yet, but God has surely enriched my life with: strong Godly men, Christian counselors, authors, pastors, studies and countless messages on how to raise a family. This weekend I was reminded of one of the things I learned, while spending time with three of my girlfriends children. To set the stage for you. We had just gotten through swimming, and were on our way back to meet Sarah Jean. I was at a stop sign, waiting to pull out, but couldnt, because a driver was holding me up. On impulse, I threw up my hand (hand, not finger), and the oldest asked What were you about to do Sam? I couldnt lie, this, is what Ive learned... was a teachable moment. My answer ministered to me as the words were leaving my mouth. Well, I was about to throw my hands up in the air, give the driver an ugly look, and ask him why he was driving so slow. Why didnt you? she asked. Because, what have I gained for the cause of Christ? If I act ugly to drivers on the road, they wont want to hear about Jesus. Sure we can go to church, pray, read our bibles, listen to Christian music. But if were not treating others with kindness, they may not want to hear about the God of the universe who loves them unconditionally. I wrapped the talk up with Unfortunately, Ive made, and continue to make, a lot of mistakes. Where Ive led many astray with my words or actions. For which I feel bad, wishing I could turn back the hands of time. Thats why I stopped myself from being ugly to that driver. Because I want to honor God first. Taking time to invest in a childs life will last a lifetime. Something Im personally learning.
