Im not at all sure how solidly historic is the story of Hypatia. I am sure that it is used as propaganda by the forces of AntiChrist. That being said, it is pretty clear that there has always been a anti-intellectual rabble element in Christianity, as in all (Id guess) religions. Nowadays the red-neck Bible Belters, the UKs evangelicals and Creationists in general are toned-down examples of this tendency. Conservative/Reactionary forces within Catholicism are also of this general ilk. Catholicism is set firmly against this, in theory, and has systematically engaged in dialogue with secular thought and made use of wisdom found in other traditions - most notably Platonism.
