Im sorry to say my baby great horned owl story didnt end happily-ever-after like I wanted. His life was doomed from the start with his mommas poor choice for a nests. The nest would have never supported a growing baby and plus her and the strong winds last Monday proved to be too much and destroyed the nest. Tuesday I just so happen to have a visiting birder from Colorado and as we walked down the street it was obvious at 80 the nest was gone. We walked over to the tree and I found little Willie. We took him to WildCareOklahoma and Rondi Large cared for him for two days until his eyes opened. The following day her husband Tom and Laura brought Willie back and we fashioned a nice nesting basket for Willie and his mom. We wanted Willie to return to his mom as quickly as possible so he wouldnt be imprinted. But sadly his mom didnt keep him warm and with the cold night last night he didnt make it. I was really hoping the momma would take responsibility and keep him warm but she didnt. It looked like there were three birds in the nest with Willie that the momma brought in but they looked like they were sleeping right next to Willie. Hopefully when Kathy Seay & Steve get home later maybe Steve can help Keith get the ladder high enough so I can take the basket down. I wasnt tall enough to get to the wire and Keith Underhill couldnt position our ladder high enough for me to safely reach. My gut feeling all along was that the outcome wasnt going to be good because Willies mom wasnt experienced enough and there was no doubt in my mind that she had lost her mate and was caring for Willie on her own. The odds were against Willie from day one I guess. Maybe that saying is true, dont mess with mother nature Anyway, I need to find a special place to bury my little Willie. Oh how I wish I could have done more for him. But it wasnt meant to be. RIP Willie, I fought for you little guy. Wish I wasnt such a cry baby :(
