Im taking an online class in poetry writing from the University of Iowa. This half-weeks assignment was to write a poem to a defined constraint or set of constraints, which could be of any sort at all. One class participants submission, by a woman identified simply as Anna J, and included below, used the following constraints: I am staying in a small house outside the city. Nearby there is a swimming hole at the river which is populated at night by teenagers who drink beer and energy drinks, who jump of cliffs and pour entire containers of Sunlight dish soap into the waterfall to make bubbles. In the mornings I go swim there. Then I collect some of the trash that has gathered, and bring it home. In the past few days I decided to transcribe the text from the beer bottles and chip bags and soggy cigarette containers, and to use this as source text to write about the swimming hole. I limit myself to the scope of the words found on those cans and labels, but dont worry about repeating words. I do not shorten or re-conjugate words, or correct words that are misspelled to be cute, but I do hyphenate or create compound words if wanted. Titles are free game. Here is her poem, which I find simpy brilliant. What do you think? FOR THE BOYS CLIFF JUMPING BY THE MEMORIAL STONE Under this star of everything we do not know, we are a storm brewing. We are in this, full throttle. This exertion. This body. This face and hair. This water. These fountains of no moderation. This sunlight. This skin! Why? Why not? We are the famous flavour. We are the wonderful. We Addidas-punch our way into the water. Are twist-happy and thick with chances. We register directly the bliss-chill of the water and the good sun. We are not sorry. We are the ice that will not melt, the unlimited batteries of nouveau boost, the special extract in the rootbeer of not aging. We are the sparkling under-king, the carbonated wet dream, that premium formula good stuff. We are, at a price you do not know, at any price, this.
