Imam Abu Hanifa once saw his son Hammad debating Kalaam (theology) - TopicsExpress

Imam Abu Hanifa once saw his son Hammad debating Kalaam (theology) and forbade him from doing so. Hammad said, “We saw you debating it, but you’re stopping us?" Imam Abu Hanifa replied, “We used to engage in theological debates, as if there were birds on our heads (ie, our heads were bowed in humility), fearing our opponent would make a mistake. But you debate wishing for your opponent to make a mistake. And whoever wants his opponent to err (in ‘aqeedah) indeed wants that person to become a kaafir. And whoever wants his opponent to become a kaafir, he has himself become a kaafir before his opponent."
