Imam Malik is the Imam of Madina, the Abode of the Hijra from the third generations of the salaf, who passed away in the year 179 AH [approxiamately 795 CE]. His school is unique in representing the living Prophetic sunna as mass- transmitted by the inhabitants of Madina al- Munawwara, the blessed city where the sharia was revealed. He is knowned as the Imam of the Imams, as he taught Imam Muhammad ash- Shaybani al- Hanafi, Imam ash- Shafii and, via ash- Shafii, Imam Ahmad. He also taught the leading hadith to al- Bukhari, Muslim and the other Imams of hadith narration.
