Immersive experiences were invented in the theater where performers and set designers transport audiences to different times and places. Merging theater with 3D technology extends the experience by removing constraints of physical staging and eliminating the boundaries between real and virtual. “Mr. & Mrs. Dream,” which premiered recently in Paris, is the first to blend these disciplines on stage, creating a set that becomes a character in symbiosis with performers. During the show walls disappear, furniture evaporates, time moves faster, and dancers leap from asteroid to asteroid, thanks to a 3D world that’s projected on four surfaces (three walls and the ground) to immerse performers. Sensors track their movements so when they jump, meteorites bounce; when they kick, leaves flutter. Hear how this technology will change the stage, similar to how “green screen” revolutionized film and learn how non-traditional applications of 3D uncover new uses for industrial applications.
