EXERCISE FOR THE BRAIN: Exercise for the brain includes training the five senses: sight, hearing, small, taste, and touch. With sight, it is important to observe an object, photograph or person and try to remember it immediately. This helps with short-term memory. Doing this over the course of a week, by the end of the week there are several objects or people you can recall with ease, which makes up long-term memory. Another memory technique is to memorize items on a menu or the lineup of a baseball team or a bible verse. With small and taste, it might be helpful to take a moment before eating a meal to try and pick out the ingredients through smell in the dish you are about to eat. Taking an extra moment when eating your food allows you to taste the ingredients as well. Smell also is important when it comes to touch. A good exercise is to close your eyes and see if you can pick out fruit or vegetable items. When practicing hearing/listening techniques, it might also be helpful to close your eyes so that you are forced to concentrate on sound even more than you normally might. And if those with lower educational levels worked at mentally un-stimulating jobs, the risk was three times higher.
