Improve your English basics: Vocabulary & Spelling! There are no spelling or vocabulary tests in the IELTS. Instead, you are assessed in these two skills in every part of the IELTS test: In the reading, listening and writing tests, you have to use the correct word form (noun, verb, adjective) and correct spelling, in the writing and speaking tests you have to accurately use a wide range of vocabulary to get a high score! Remember that you can use either British or American spelling in your test, both are acceptable, but you should keep to the one kind of spelling throughout. Practice at an online spelling lab of common IELTS words by Stephen Lock at UAE University College. ugru.uaeu.ac.ae/Spelling/pc.html There are lots of ways to enhance your vocabulary. 1: Keep a vocabulary notebook: Every time you read, listen to, or watch something and you hear an unfamiliar word, look it up in your dictionary! Try using your new words as much as you can as this will help to cement them in your active vocabulary. 2: If you prefer to learn from a list of words, you can have a look at Michael Wests 2000 most important words in English at newgeneralservicelist.org/ (the download is in the top left corner and is in Excel format). Or if youre doing the academic IELTS, check out Avril Coxheads Academic Word List at victoria.ac.nz/lals/resources/academicwordlist/publications/awlsublists1.pdf (there are 10 sublists with the most frequent words in Sublist 1, then Sublist 2 and so on). 3: When you’re using new words, make sure you look at the different forms and learn how to use them correctly! 4: Once you have a good foundation of words, study collocations and phrasal verbs to increase your range of vocabulary! If you’ve got a tip or web address that you think other people will find useful, please share it below! Remember: keep positive and keep practising, and you will see improvement.
