In 1881, a Berkeley freshmen had an altercation with a sophomore. A "council of war" was held and it was decided to haze the freshmen. The sophomore class (except two students) plucked the freshmen from a laboratory "cut off his hair, treated him to a cold bath and tossed him in a blanket for the space of thirty minutes." A group of sophomores decided to haze some other students and a "scene of wild confusion followed." historicnews.blogspot.ca/2013/01/university-hazing.html?q=hazing
