In 1923 the Lithuanians were revolting. The League of Nations had left them under French control after the Great War, and lord knows that would make me revolt. Cant blame a country for throwing a bit of a tantrum. Now personally, I dont know much of Lithuanian history or culture, or how exactly its different from Latvia, or Luxembourg, or Laos. The L countries are confusing. What we learned today is the Lithuanian people may have been revolting, but their food certainly is not. We kick off the evening with some Henninger Lager, coming from a neighboring region of Germany, while we wait for me to finish touching every piece of food that got plated. We got to try Balandėliai, grass fed beef and pork with rice and Porcini mushrooms stuffed into red cabbage leaves baked in a chunky tomato base, 2 kinds of Koldūnai, or Pierogi if you prefer, a Saurkraut and a potato and onion with a hint of pumpkin, first boiled then butter fried and smothered with a mushroom hunter sauce. We finish off with Blynai torte, the Crepe like pancakes layered with lignonberry preserve, vanilla custard sauce, stewed blackberries and powdered sugar, finished with a glop of whipped cream. I reckon I will never learn much more about the Lithos than I have tonight, but I have learned that people that eat like this cant stay revolting for long.
