In 1960 my mothers Aunt left $152,596.06 to Newfane Hospital. Aunt LuLu Wilson was in business farming with her two brothers. They had a 100 acres of land. None of them ever married. Aunt LuLu lived on Lake Street Wilson. Dr. John Argue shared his dream with her about a Community Hospital. Aunt LuLu was a stern woman of sorts but she gave to those in the community who were in need. LuLu would not give to anyone whom she thought would waste anything she gave them or use it foolishly. Example...when her will was read she listed my cousins in it as benefactors. One cousin was left out of her will....her reason being....stated right their in the will....I witnessed you-----standing at the corner of Lake & Young St smoking a cigarette ...I do not approve of that and will not have my hard earned money go up in smoke! Straight forward she was! But Aunt Lulu had adopted Dr Argues dream. She dreamed that the community would grow...that the adjoining towns would grow. So the stipulations in her will for the building was that it was to be built to specs to add a 2nd floor on. Her wishes were to have an elevator put in at the time of the build and it was. (It was removed when the ICU was remodeled. During the renovation her little picture was taken down and never put up again. She passed in 1960. I want to share her picture with you..,,she donated the Med/Surg wing..,known as the LuLu Wilson Wing. No one on the Hospital would even know who she was. By the way ....the car in the picture was sold in her estate sale for $700.
