The movements leader, Senator Gaylord Nelson, with the support of 2000 colleges and 10,000 public schools, persuaded politicians on Capitol Hill that environmental legislation had a substantial constituency. Within two years, we saw the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, establishment of the EPA, the ban on DDT, and the reduction of lead from paint.
