In 1972 Canada and the Soviet Union played an eight game series of hockey. While the games played in Canada were shown on WSBK-TV, the station could not afford to televise the games from Moscow. The US rights for the games wound up belonging to WGBH-TV which showed 3 of the games on tape delay during the week and the game played on Sunday was shown live. WGBH-TV could not show the weekday games live as they were showing a live chess match from Iceland. The station received a record amount of donations during the 4 games. The games were also aired live on WHDH radio.
