In 1978 social worker Jill Halverson - seeing an increase in women on the streets following the closure of hospitals and facilities - used the money she saved for a down payment on a home to open The Downtown Womens Center which provided food, shelter, services and safety for single homeless women in Los Angeles - an under-served population within an already under-served population. Today the Center continues to grow and provide permanent supportive housing as well as a safe and healthy community that fosters dignity, respect, and advocacy aimed at ending homelessness for women. How lucky that Donna Delacy and I got to be of service and share our Saturday morning with women taking steps to discover and realize their best selves! I love Jill Halverson. I love this place! XO
