In 1987, Dark Horse Comics acquired the rights to Godzilla and for 12 years published various comic books based on the character. Dark Horse published a six-issue miniseries, Godzilla, from 1988 to 1989 that was a translation of the Japanese manga The Return of Godzilla. It was reprinted in trade paperback from in 1990 and 1995, and reprinted as Dark Horse Classics: Terror of Godzilla in 1998 and 1999. Godzilla featured in the anthology Dark Horse Comics for two issues in 1993, and in Godzilla: Urban Legends (a one-shot). Another one-shot, Godzilla vs. Hero Zero, appeared in 1995. From 1995 to 1996, Dark Horse published Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which featured new monsters and a supervillain who shunts Godzilla through time to cause any number of disaster (the San Francisco earthquake, the sinking of the Titanic, etc.). Simultaneously, Godzilla appeared in one issue of the anthology Dark Horse Presents and one issue of A Decade of Dark Horse. Reprints of these stories appeared in 1998, retitled as Godzilla: Age of Monsters and Godzilla: Past, Present, Future. Their quality was iffy. Sometimes, Godzilla was treated with great respect, and sometimes as a goofy, silly character. Some of the new monsters were excellent, and some downright awful. But anything was an improvement over the Marvel comic version....
