In 1993, Warner Bros released this animated Batman movie made by the people behind Batman: TAS into the theaters. It bombed. It gained a second life when Siskel and Ebert reviewed it on their show and gave it high praise. Ebert commended it for making Batman the definitive leading man of the movie instead of a guest star and Siskel said it was better than the two Burton movies and the then-newly released Batman Forever by Schumacher. However, the movie never picked up a strong resurgence through DVD or merchandise. One can only speculate how well it would have done if it were released today with word of mouth traveling all over the world through the internet. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm remains a footnote despite the popularity of its parent (and its sibling) shows which endures to this day. For my money, this is still the best Batman movie and I prefer this over the live actions movies including the Nolan trilogy. It got almost everything right: Batman as the tragedy, the detective and most importantly he was the leading man of his movie instead of the villains taking over the narrative. This was the movie that got Dana Delany her role as Lois Lane in Superman: The Animated Series and her chemistry with Kevin Conroy was amazing. Mark Hamill gave one of his best performances as the Joker and all the cast members involved brought their characters to life. What do you guys think of it? youtube/watch?v=TjAFbEP0wK4
