In 2010 my niece, my cousin Liisia and son Paul, whom she carried on her back, my daughter and I were snuck up on by a grizzly bear while picking berries. My daughter, who I had just started to foster, was extremely dependent and in the process of picking my own berries I was trying to teach her to pick her own. We had brought my dog Smoke, a husky dog, for bear protection, but my daughter proceeded to cry and whine because she wanted me to pick the berries for her and carry her. Thus, the noises attracted a bear, my 13 year old niece spotted him looking at my nephew Paul on Liisias back. I thought we were close enough to town that we did not need a gun, and in seeing the bear eyeing my family I instinctively looked for any means of protection for them, a rock, stick, etc. In seeing the bear 5 feet behind her, my cousin Liisia was mid-stride to a full on run, when I yelled at her to walk. I grabbed Cuppy and Millena by the collar of their necks and tried to get them to jabber and walk out of there. I left all of our belongings behind, and upon looking back he was following us. Cuppys sippy cup full of apple juice saved us, as he meandered towards it and drank the contents and rummaged through our sack of junk. The photo of him was taken at a far distance one he came after us, he was tall and super skinny, and its amazing we are all alive today.
