In 2011, the state Department of Public Safety was ordered to study the feasibility of privatizing maintenance operations at prisons. On Monday, Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Thom Tillis got their answer - its not. The reports conclusion states that Based on the analysis contained in this report, the department has concluded that there are no significant savings to be realized through the privatizing of prison maintenance operations. It goes on to say that the state employees have more expertise, respond quicker, place a greater emphasis on controlling costs and performing preventative maintenance and hold to a higher level of internal security. Of course state employees and SEANC already knew all that, but its nice to have it confirmed by DPS.
