In Adamawa Karma Reigns Supreme by Gainaako Here’s how Karma works… In 1999 Atiku Abubakar gets elected as Governor and before he was sworn-in gets elevated to Vice President. From then on his political fortunes soared and he went on to become the most powerful VP Nigeria ever had. At the height of his power, his political influence was reputed to be even more far-reaching than the President’s. But as his popularity and influence spread in political circles, his popularity in his home State of Adamawa dipped. The people resented the fact that he was not leveraging his immense powers and influence in bringing much needed development to the State. In fact, he was largely seen as a major impediment to the progress of the state as the then governor Boni Haruna and all his inactions were seen as an extension of Atiku. When the 2003 elections came, the masses of Adamawa saw it as an opportunity to pay Atiku back in his own coins. They turned their backs on his godson Boni Haruna the same way he (Atiku) had for four years turned his back on their plight. They voted massively for ANPP’s Adamu Modibbo but to their utter dismay, the results announced by INEC told a very different story. It was widely believed that the governorship election was massively rigged as well as some key National assembly seats including that of Prof. Jibril Aminu. Atiku of course was the usual suspect. Karma set in when months later disagreements between Atiku and the President came to the public domain. As the conflict heated up, Atiku gained a lot of sympathy support from the wider Northern Nigeria but in Adamawa people viewed the situation with placid indifference (the same disposition with which Atiku had viewed their wretched plight all those years - Karma). Prof. Aminu who benefitted immensely from Atiku in the 2003 elections (some say he only retained his senatorial seat courtesy Atiku) saw an opportunity to upstage Atiku and become the overlord of Adamawa politics. He became Obasanjo’s point man in his fight with Atiku. A fight that was to see Atiku leave the PDP for AC (Action Congress). In 2007, Atiku supported Ibrahim Bapetel for governorship on the platform of AC. On the other hand, Jibril Aminu in his bid to free Adamawa politics from the stranglehold of Atiku and perhaps establish a stranglehold of his own, picked Murtala Nyako from the ANPP, dusted him up and brought him to the PDP and helped him secure the party’s ticket. Nyako won the election, Atiku began to look like a spent force, and Jibril Aminu began to feel and act like a political titan. But then karma set in again. Nyako probably decided he wanted to dominate Adamawa politics too and the easiest way to do that was to turn on his benefactor Prof. Aminu and neutralize him politically. Which he did quite effectively to the extent that his senatorial seat was wrested from him by a man who by Jibril Aminu’s standards can only be described as an upstart. The Prof. was finally made to leave the party just the way he was used to make Atiku leave the party some months prior (Karma). Obviously motivated by how effectively he dealt with Prof. Aminu, Nyako went on to become that proverbial bull in a china shop. He picked up at least one fight with virtually everyone who was someone politically in Adamawa. In 2011 he became to President Jonathan what Jibril Aminu was to President Obasanjo – a point man for cutting Atiku down to size. Which he did because Atiku failed to secure the votes of Adamawa delegates at the PDP presidential primaries all thanks to Nyako. By 2015 Nyako had fought virtually everybody and he had very few friends left. The proof of this is in the fact that when he crossed over to the APC, na only him waka go. The state legislature remained firmly PDP and that set the stage for the next round of karma. So when the impeachment proceedings that commenced as a fallout to his falling out with Goodluck Jonathan (his ally in 2011 and for whom Nyako delivered Adamawa), Nyako had virtually no friends in Adamawa to turn to. He had fought Bamanga to a standstill, betrayed Aminu, and backstabbed Atiku. And I guess they in turn decided to allow karma run its full course. Dont you just love Karma? Gainaako
