In Arabic, a PARTY to celebrate something is called a HAFLA. In Cebuano, HAPLA means to FALL FLAT on ones belly. In American English, a HOOPLA refers to an unnecessary fuss surrounding something. When I was working in Manila some 25 years ago, our janitor applied for a salary loan so he can throw a party, a HAFLA, for their towns fiesta. The boss summoned him and told him straight on his face, I will approve your loan application, but do you realize that your monthly salary will be deducted to pay for your loan the whole year? You must pay even if ma-HAPLA ka sa kababayad (You must pay even if you fall flat in paying what is due to the company). Are you doing this in thanksgiving to your patron saint or you just want to brag to your friends that you have money? The rest of the day he was quiet. In the end he canceled his loan application and he thanked the boss for making him open his eyes. In this times of financial crises, I think it is but wise to be frugal. Why do we have to spend money to impress people we dont even know? It is no longer acceptable to throw a party if you cant afford it. Lets put an end to this HOOPLA.
