In Bukusu tradition there exist a traditional circumcision practice known as Khuminya. It has have been practiced since time immemorial and will not end soon. It usually occurs in August and sometimes December after every two years. A young man usually takes himself though a process that culminates in circumcision in public. No anaesthesia is applied. Plain flesh cutting. It is slightly a painful process but it is the only way one is initiated to manhood. The circumciser is a person who often claims to be affected by a spirit. When the famous circumcision song is sung it influences him to go into a circumcision mood. The guy cuts you raw. He applies fine but specially treated soil to the foreskin, which he the proceeds to cut. This usually takes about 10 seconds. At this point the red skin is exposed. He will then proceed to cut it meticulously. One experiences pain when the cutting is done on the vein just below the p-word. After he is done he blows a traditional whistle to signify the end of the process. But usually this is the point when one experiences the most pain. You are then asked to sit down and a traditional nurse then pours spirit on the red wound. At this point, the pain is soo unbearable. Only the brave will continue to stand. They would do so until all their demands are met. Usually, they would demand to given a bull, money etc. Myself l demanded for a small bull which l later sold to pay for my form one school fees. After you sit down, you are covered with a leso. The guests would then show their appreciation by handing over gifts. You are then taken away to a hut to begin the healing process. The difficult part of the healing event is where you get a male termite to bit off some part of the p-word so that you can remove puss and quicken the healing process.
