Today we met a young couple who are sleeping rough, they are 23, they are certainly no angels but due to a legal issue that has caused her 11 year residency in Blackpool to be broken by 3 weeks she is now no longer eligible for housing. He is not because he has only been here for months, and he cannot go home because once again a rule would be applied that he had not been resident consistently in his home town. I know councils are pressed but this is absolute insanity. I have spoken to people who are so desperate that they would resort to stealing simply in order to be locked up somewhere warm. The trouble is this creates a cycle of re-offending and terrible lack of esteem problems, surely ti would be more productive to help people to find flats and get themselves sorted out than it is to put them through a cycle of degradation and despair.... Or am I missing something?
