In Comparison to Others, It Looks Worse! Wahta Mohawk Territory - TopicsExpress

In Comparison to Others, It Looks Worse! Wahta Mohawk Territory is the smallest of the Haudenosaunee territories on the Canadian side of the line. It is difficult to find an adequate comparison among our relations. Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, although more populated and having a larger infrastructure, has the same number of people on Council as Wahta. Kanehsatake Mohawk Territory is also a smaller Haudenosaunee community by population, but still significantly larger than Wahta. During their first two weeks in office, the current Wahta Council paid themselves $16,839. This projects to $437,814 for the entire year. This is approximately $280,000 more than the total compensation for the Tyendinaga Mohawk Council, and $183,000 more than the Mohawk Council of Kanehsatake. The total projected for the members of the new Council is more than five times (5x) as much as the total paid for the four previous members of Council. In fact, according to the projections, the total compensation for the new Council surpassed the total compensation for the previous Council after 5 weeks in office! The Wahta Chief has a day job. Upon being elected he committed to being available in the office two days per week at $300 per day. However, the audited statements show that in the first two weeks in office he claimed $4,350 in compensation, or far more than $300/day. This works out to $113,100 for the year. This would make him the highest paid Chief among all the Haudenosaunee territories in Ontario and Quebec. As it stands, this projected amount is more than triple the compensation provided to the Chief of Tyendinaga and more than double the compensation for the Chief of Kanehsatake. According to the projections, the compensation received by the Wahta Chief alone will surpass all four members of the previous Council before New Years Day. It is time to clear the air. 1. The current Wahta Council must unveil their expense claims for the first two weeks in office and explain, with evidence, their extraordinary compensation rates. 2. Council must distribute to Wahtaronon an audited statement of Council remuneration reflecting the compensation received by Council members from March 2014 to November 30, 2014. It should be released prior to the Christmas holidays to Wahtaronon.
