In July 2002, my husband Danny and I had just returned from our annual Cape Cod vacation. Our neighbor and friend Ethel had taken care of Jet-Jag in our absence. Ethel mentioned to us in one of our calls that Jet seemed a little under the weather. We thought maybe it was from the extreme heat. She opened up all the windows for him and put the ceiling fan on so he would stay cool. When we walked in the door upon returning from our vacation and saw Jet-Jag, we immediately knew something was wrong. He was lying on the floor motionless. When we picked him up he was limp. When we stood him up on the floor, he would walk a few steps and then would lie down again. He was physically exhausted. His nose was warm and he had no energy. We still thought that it was probably from the heat. We immediately took him to the vet. The vet performed a battery of tests and then gave us the devastating prognosis. Jet-Jag Carroll, at the age of ten months, had Feline Leukemia. The vet’s recommendation was to put him down immediately. My husband and I stood staring at our beautiful little black fur ball with a lump quickly developing in our throats. When we protested the vet assured us that Jet-Jag would continue to grow weaker and weaker and that in two weeks maximum he would become so weak we would have to put him down. “Why put yourselves through two weeks of agony” the vet proclaimed. So there we were, my husband and I in the vet’s office, so quiet you could hear a pin drop, faced with an impossible decision. What follows is a heart-warming story of hope, love, and compassion, and how this trial not only impacted our cat Jet-Jag but also impacted our family in a way we never imagined. But let’s start at the beginning with the story of Jet-Jag Carroll. Now available on Amazon as an E-book
