In May & June of 1936, regional celebrations of the Texas Centennial were heavily promoted throughout Texas. Advertisements, such as the one seen here, touted the worlds most scenic wonders that could be seen on a tour through our state. One of the stops was the May 28-30 Historic Celebrations in San Augustine and one of the more interesting souvenirs purchased at this event was this oversized plaster cast of a wooden nickel. The design was made by Engineer Henry E. Elrod of Dallas who went on to design several important water works systems in North Texas by mid-century.
