In a convo on FB, someone said: so sick of the whole black lives matter rhetoric; like, obviously any institution designed to exist for the common welfare/protection-at-large does NOT think so...memes and hashtags wont solve this. This needs to be uprooted on a systemic level. Ive been reared to think, from the comfort of my privilege, that violence/rioting is not the answer, but at this point i feel like upending a police car and setting fire to shit. My response? I must disagree. Memes and hashtags become part of the movement. Words matter. The sharing of words and the collective of sentiment change things. Social media such as Twitter allow a disadvantaged group to have a voice where the mainstream media can take notice. It is easy to say #blacklivesmatter is useless if one’s life experience is not colored.
