In a nation founded on second chances at opportunity, America does - TopicsExpress

In a nation founded on second chances at opportunity, America does very little to rehabilitate nonviolent offenders who crowd our prison system. Things have gotten so bad that 25% of the worlds prison population is now housed in the United States, even though we have less than 5% of the worlds total population. But there is some good news. While even recently there was good reason to believe Congress would never do anything about our draconian sentencing laws, times are changing. Senator Cory Booker has introduced the REDEEM Act—a common-sense measure that will give Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes a fair shot to reenter society, find a job, support their families, and reach their potential. And the bill has a broad coalition behind it—even bipartisan support, with Senator Rand Paul as a co-sponsor. Stay tuned. Reform may be on the way
