In a recent conversation with a senior African UN official, he inquired about my country’s population. Without hesitance, I responded 110,000. “110,000?” he countered in absolute amazement. His reaction was however quite understandable, considering that he hails from a country of approximately 45 million people – thus rendering 110,000 people comparable to a small village in his country. His next few words were for me both profound and sobering. “So your country cannot possibly have any serious political tension with 110,000 people now?” It was in his mind a question, and I am quite certain that for a gentleman with such a sharp intellect, his hypothesis was already formed – that there is little to no chance of the people of this tiny nation being divided on the basis of politics. In my mind however, it was a profound statement that pointed directly to an irrational and increasingly deep-rooted culture of political divisiveness that has gripped St. Vincent & the Grenadines. I am absolutely convinced that as a people we can do much better than this. In fact, it is incumbent upon every one of us as Vincentians to check ourselves. I have noted over the years – and can proudly say – that I have many outstanding Vincentian colleagues on either side of the existing local political divide. These are young men and women that I maintain a very high level of respect for, and would under no circumstance allow this unnatural and irrational culture of political divisiveness to drive wedges into relationships and partnerships that are likely to have a positive effect on the national development outlook for St. Vincent & the Grenadines! So to my phenomenal and beloved brothers and sisters on either side of this misfit-of-a-divide, please note that you have an impending appointment at the table of national development. Please be ready when national duty calls, and do not be deterred by people, their faces, nor their voices.
