In case anyone is interested to know whats happening Hong Kong right now, here a good 2-minute video that explains the situation briefly but adequately enough for those who cared to understand how big this is for the fight of democracy not just in Hong Kong, but also in the currently totalitarian Chinese state. I can assure you its not a case of Western media bias that is blowing the scale and significance of the protests out of proportion. The tension has been simmering for a long time in Hong Kong ever since Beijing planted the new puppet leader. This is the city I was born in and spent the majority of my childhood and teenage years - and I have never seen civil disobedience at such a massive scale; never seen people so angry about the government; and never ever seen such violence and police brutality inflicted upon them. What wasnt explained in the video was Beijings increasing political and social control in Hong Kong. Everything from the white paper that proposes to take away our legislative and judicial freedom, the illegal legislation of the West Kowloon development plan, to journalists who exposed corruption among top members of the PRC being brutally attacked by anonymous hit-man, to the widespread problem of Mainland Chinese tourists disrespecting basic civic laws of the city while we were basically told to just suck it up and deal with it. And these examples are all just tip of the iceberg to explain why we fear the future for Hong Kong - a future in which all our democratic rights and freedom are stripped from us. We fear for a future where the people are no longer protected by the law. A future where the government could sensor media, arrests activists, and shut down newspapers that dared to publish anti-government sentiments, a future of 1984. Why would we want a morally bankrupt government that is rich but utterly corrupt, known for many violations of human rights, and has absolutely zero regard for the people it supposedly represents? This is the same government who showed no hesitation to mow down thousands of unarmed students at Tiananmen with army tanks because they dared to demand for a freer and more open society. Why would we want to be part of a country like that?
