In case you missed this, James Fitzpatrick posted this very interesting observation elsewhere on my page: As someone who grew up in a very Fundamentalist household I have watched with interest the changes that have occurred amongst religious people on this. It used to be that Christians took great pains to dissociate themselves from the Hebraic Law and proclaimed that Christs message was to do away with the An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth mentality and approach to justice. According to their theology, Christs own unjustified death was an argument for mercy and his commandment to Do unto others as you would have be done unto to you. This radically changed with the execution of the Rosenbergs. The anti-Roosevelt/anti-Communist politicians like Joseph McCarthy whipped up a fear of religious repression amongst the Fundamentalists and Evangelicals. They came to think that they could only preserve the faith by approving the killing of Communists. They began to diminish the teachings of Christ in their churches and embraced St. Paul as the true explainer of Christ, removing any mention of the Golden Rule from their teaching and only focusing on retribution for sin. From there it was easy to move to being supporters of the Death Penalty. Now as a movement, they are as blood thirsty as the Romans who once fed them to the lions.
