In celebration of the current exhibitions at the MacLaren, we will be highlighting artists whose work is being displayed. This week’s artist, English sculptor Henry Moore, is well known for his abstract works based on the human body. Moore had a keen interest in sculpting from an early age. He was raised in Yorkshire by parents who supported his artistic endeavours, but were wary of a sculpting career. Following his service in the First World War, Moore attended the Leeds School of Art (now Leeds College of Art) and studied the works of Michelangelo and Giovanni Pisano on a travel scholarship in Northern Italy. He later became a professor at the Royal College of Art and the Chelsea School of Art. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the Chelsea School of Art was evacuated and Moore resigned from his teaching post. He was inspired at this time by the destruction of war and the reclining figures in the tube during air raids. He was also later influenced by family relationships following the death of his mother and the birth of his daughter. Moore has received several honours for his work including the Order of Merit and the Order of the Companions of Honour. You can see Henry Moore’s work on display at the MacLaren from July 10, 2014 to November 2, 2014 in the exhibitions “MOORE / SNOW” and “ETROG / MOORE” maclarenart/exhibitions/etrog-moore
