In college writing, one of the most egregious mistakes is plagiarism, borrowing someones ideas as your own. One of our states major politicians was found guilty of plagiarism. He calls the attention to his misdeed a smoke screen by the opposing party to distract from their nefarious deeds and vows to fight them with all his power. In college writing, we call that planting a red herring, a ploy to distract. . As the story goes, the smelly herring would draw chasing blood hounds away from their intended prey, say, escaping prisoners. Somewhere along the line, that has become a metaphor for all actions like our politicians. A poster in our class text showed a large crowd. In that crowd, people were holding signs to save whales, etc. Among all the save the whales was this placard which read, Save the Red Herring. It appears our politician is a member of that movement.
