*** In early 1969, I was 22 years old and cheating on my first wife. First and only time I ever did that in all of my marriages. I was at a party in Baltimore, MD with this sweet young freshman from the University of Maryland and the DJ played this song. The room itself seemed to breathe out a deep sigh and suddenly became very still. Somewhere around the middle of the third verse, when Tracy Nelson had built the tension to a point where you thought you might just burst with the pain of it, I realized I was crying like a baby. And it still brings tears to my eyes today. Tracy who, along with Bonnie Bramlet, Bonnie Raitt, Claudia Lanier and Linda Ronstadt was among the best white, female blues singers of my generation, or any other for that matter, wrote and performed this incredible song and recorded it on her first album, Mother Earth ( the title of another killer blues song, by the way).***
