In honor of my good old friend, Craig Kohls: Craig Kohls is - TopicsExpress

In honor of my good old friend, Craig Kohls: Craig Kohls is having major heart surgery Thursday morning. Those of you who know him, please keep him in your thoughts. Here are some of my thoughts right now... Craig was one of my major influences during my high school and college years. He taught me the love and passion for playing and coaching softball; he inspired me to keep myself in shape (at times); and he sometimes took care of me when I couldnt do so for myself (enough said on that!). We commonly attempted to solve the worlds problems, with very little success; and we tried to bring a happy, smiling attitude to most every environment we entered into. Regarding the influence he had on me about exercise, I can still remember him being a binge exerciser. He would allow himself to slack off for some period of time and then once softball season was around the corner or some other activity warranted it, he would go on a massive workout program. I can remember him in Spandex (really?) shorts and a sweat-soaked head band running the hilly streets around Ellsworth. It seemed like no matter how hot, no matter how humid, Craig would continue for what seemed like hours of running up and down those hills. This would go on for weeks. When he set his mind to doing something, it would be done. (It never really paid off though because every year, the first time he had to hustle down first base line he would pull something!) Anyway, he never let that keep him down either. So I am now this sort of binge exerciser too. Over the last 30 years I have commonly been on stringent 18 month, never miss a day, exercise routines followed by 6 months of slothfulness. The cycle still continues today, but instead of 18 months ON, its more like 3 months ON and 6 months OFF. As of a couple days ago, the bathroom scale greeted me with my highest weight ever... 254 lbs! Its time to get back in shape. SO, in Craigs honor, Im going to take over for his current inability to get himself back into shape in the SHORT term. Im going to take on Craigs fitness efforts as he goes through his surgery and recovery. I started on Saturday with a goal of walking 150 miles before the end of August. So far, 4 days in Ive logged just over 14 miles with hopes of another 3 or 4 tonight. Craig, I will have your future recovery in mind every day I go out. Im hoping that you are back and ON your next up swing in no time! While Im out on the pavement, I hope you can help me with my normal evening activity too. I need you to make sure the Royals dont go on any 3+ game losing streaks in the next two months! As you know, we have a real shot of making the playoffs (Playoffs? Did someone say Playoffs?) for the first time in nearly 30 years. We need to go about 5 games over 500 each of these last two months to get there. What do you think? Can we do it? You will be in my thoughts, my old buddy. Anyone else want to join me?
