In june 1849, when Hudson Taylor was 17, his mother locked herself in a room 50 miles from home. Unknown to her son, she resolved that afternoon not only to pray that Hudson would become a christian, but to stay in the room until she was sure her prayers haad been answered. That very afternoon, Hudson picked up a tract, read it, fell on his knees and accepted Jesus and His salvation. He realized for the first time the full significance of the Saviours cry from the cross it is finished It was a wonderful day, an answer to both his mothers and sisters prayers. But it was only a beginning......Three years after his conversion, Hudson Taylor told his mother that he felt called to travel to China as a missionary as soon as possible. In his preparation, he lived as cheaply as he could, giving away about 60% of his small earnings. In addition, he decided that his spiritual muscles needed strengthening. when i get to China, he thought I shall have no claim on anyone for anything: my only claim will be on God. How important, therefore to learn before leaving England to move men, through God, by prayer alone. (Extracted from Radical Discipleship by Roger Steer. Forward by John Stott)
