In many ways, astrology was the first psychology in that it constituted an early means for understanding human nature. Rooted in the observation that cosmos mirrors the earthly realm, the ancients systematically observed how the nature and cycles of the planets corresponded to the nature and experiences of human beings. While ancient astrology roughly described how human behavior correlated to planetary positions, these descriptions were limited to surface features of the personality. In contrast, AstroPsychology plumbs the depths of the psyche, and does so in terms that are significantly more detailed than its predecessors. It depicts how astrology symbolizes basic needs, developmental stages, psychological functions, cognitive structures, internal dialogues, intrapsychic conflict, unconscious complexes, defense mechanisms, and personality disorders. The current tendency in psychiatry to reduce people to biological machines that need to be medicated to function properly. Likewise, people are made into things when they are diagnosed as obsessives, schizophrenics, borderlines, narcissists, or any other category of mental disorder that implies individuals have or are a disease. Conversely, stories have movement built into them; characters evolve, conflicts resolve, and the entire narrative potentially moves in the direction of a satisfying ending. It is precisely astrologys potential to objectify the internal story that makes it such a useful tool for conscious evolution.
