In memory of Victor Jara, who has murdered on this day, and of thoese who had gone before him. Never forget Sept 11, 1973! On that day, President Salvadore Allende of Chile, the Hugo Chavez of his day, was overthrown and brutally murdered, along with hundreds of his countrymen on that day alone (official figures are lower) Allende allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a machine gun (over a thousand bullets were in his body [& again, official figures are lower) The coup was masterminded by Kissinger and worked in co-operation with major corporations. The noble prize winning poet Pablo Neruda was murdered in the next few days, and Victor Jara, a world famous folksinger and friend of Phil Ochs, was murdered within the next week. Jara was shoot in the head by an officer who played Russian roulette with Jara, by placing a single round in his revolver, spinning the cylinder, placing the muzzle against Jaras head and pulling the trigger. The officer repeated this a couple of times, until a shot fired and Víctor fell to the ground. The officer then ordered two conscripts to finish the job, by firing into Jaras body. The contrast between the themes of his songs, on love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a symbol of struggle for human rights and justice worldwide. youtube/watch?v=MMOeig9fdi4
