In most of the modern self financing colleges, a slavish culture is being developed here in our state, esp. those run by churches etc. It is to discourage general reading at hostel rooms. Only study material is allowed at study times (rule). In effect books are being removed always by wardens or watchdog teachers. One must read widely to be able to tackle human issues inany field of activity. Why discourage reading. You can see the resut in programs involving GK in Tv. The standard is horribly low. Last we had a Tv show in which two cinema personal of Kerala, who were also media personalities, who does not know ttappadi is in palghat district. One of them it is in Vayanad.. !!! Reading must be encouraged in Schools, colleges and even professional institutions.
