In my Death and Dying class we had to write a journal about a persons death that impacted us the most. But the journal wasnt about the death but their life. I rarely get to speak about who my dad was as a person but rather how he died and when. I wanted to honor my dad and his life and share part of the journal I submitted. I lost my dad three years ago to prostate cancer. My dad was one of a kind; I didn’t realize how special I was to have him until he was gone. As I have grown up I didn’t realize that not every dad took off for every single practice, game, teacher conference and Boy Scout meeting. My dad was also very affectionate, which at the time seemed embarrassing that he would cry when we got an A or a homerun in softball but now I miss often. Whenever he walked by he would clap his hands two times, open his arms for a hug and say “who is daddy’s sweet baby?” and in the hug he patted my back three times. My dad loved working for Brooks Brothers, southern rock, Formula 1 and his Alfa Romeo’s and being on Daufuskie Island. He could fix anything like restore a Jeep, build elaborate bird houses and every household issue was something he could do. I have never seen someone load a dishwasher so slow but now I know why I am so particular with the dishwasher as well.
