In my opinion, I much prefer the classic horror films starring the elegant presences of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff over the modern and extremely violent horror films featuring such characters like Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees. I remember first watching A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) out of curiosity and found it so disturbing that I could barely sleep that night afterward. After all, the thought of a hideously disfigured, seemingly immortal serial killer invading ones peaceful dreams and then brutally murdering them is pretty terrifying. After reading Leonard Maltins positive review of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS (1987) and reading his praises of its imaginative qualities, I then decided to watch the film...on mute with closed captionimg while listening to Johann Sebastian Bachs exuberant 1733 cantata Magnificat in D major in the background so I wouldnt feel so disturbed. Although Im sure Robert Englund is a fine actor and the special effects in these films are excellent, Ive never been frightened by Bela Lugosi in any of his films because I know that he was such a kind, elegant gentleman in real life whose stage-trained presence gave extremely professional performances onscreen. Instead, Ive always respected, admired and enjoyed Lugosis screen presence. All in all, the devious and insane Dr. Richard Vollin (Bela Lugosi) in THE RAVEN (1935) completely blows the likes of Freddy, Michael and Jason out of the water while manically proclaiming, What a torture! What a delicious torture, Bateman. Greater than Poe! Poe only conceived it. I have done it, Bateman! POE, YOU ARE AVENGED! Ah-hah-hah-hah-hah! AH-HAH-HAH-HAH-HAH!
