In my personal view (not that of any council or political grouping) there is a great deal of hypocrisy being shown over the flag proposal. To get wavy benches 28 people were “accosted” in the street for their support and it was a done deal. To put up a new building for the Home group in the centre of a closed estate with a primary school, to be run by their Stonham division (google them to see who they house), a County and a District councillor for the ward negotiated until it was agreed and only then held a, closed to all but those with invites, public meeting to justify it. This ended with some of the local councillors stating that it was a done deal and the residents should “make the best of it”. After having ring fenced £30K for improvements to the football pitch on the Western Heights so that it could once again be used for Sunday league games the cash was returned to general reserves. This followed an offer by China Gateway to swap that field for another that they would turn into a sports field while they built houses on the field that none of the local residents wanted. After English Heritage objected to building on the field, it took until April this year for China Gateway to confirm that was withdrawing its offer. Suddenly, and without being discussed at a minuted committee, a plan has been worked out and tenders received for building a toilet block, a café and tree planting (on a field with war time tunnels beneath it) without consulting the local residents. This was passed with two votes while the rest of the committee abstained. Then we have a petition for a flag to fly by the War Memorial with 4,500 signatures and a public consultation is needed, complete with the misleading information that put it on the flagstone walk. Even this came out as two to one in favour of the flag and yet now it is the objections that need to be sought out and listened to. Why is it that Hypocrisy is the first word to come to mind?
